Everton midfielder Darron Gibson has been forced to withdraw from the Republic of Ireland squad for next week's friendly in Serbia through injury.

The 24-year-old pulled out after tearing a thigh muscle while training with his club.

Gibson was a member of Giovanni Trapattoni's squad that crashed out of Euro 2012 at the group stage following three straight defeats.

He performed impressively for Everton during the second of last season after securing a move from Manchester United in January.

Gibson's place in the squad was set to go to Wes Hoolahan, but the Norwich player later also pulled out.

He has had to withdraw as a result of an Achilles problem which requires rest.
