Port Vale's players are yet to sign new contracts offered by the club's administrators after discussing legality issues with the PFA.
As many as 18 players are seeking clarification from the Professional Footballers' Association on whether deals originally agreed by prospective owner Keith Ryder can be automatically transferred to whoever eventually takes charge at Vale Park.
A statement on the club's official website read: "The last thing the players want to do is to cause any problems for the club and they are actively looking for an amicable agreement in order that the situation will be settled.
"The players are understandably cautious as they are afraid if new owners come in to the club the contracts may be declared void."
Vale's PFA representative, defender Gareth Owen, added: "We want to resolve the situation as soon as possible, but until the PFA can clarify the situation we have to err on the side of caution.
"Once the PFA have checked on the legality of the contracts offered, then hopefully everything will work out to a satisfactory conclusion."
