Mario Gomez will miss the start of the season for Bayern Munich after undergoing ankle surgery on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old sustained an injury to his right ankle during Saturday's defeat to Werder Bremen in a pre-season friendly.
A scan of the injury revealed loose bodies which required surgery to remove them, and club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt believes it will be three weeks before he can resume training.
His period of rest will see him miss the start of Bayern's Champion's League programme and Germany's high-profile friendly with Argentina.
But Gomez is totally focused on making a full recovery, saying in a statement: "I am pleased that the operation was a success and that the pain has now gone.
"Now I will need to be a bit patient and then I will do all I can to get back as quickly as possible."
New signings Mario Mandzukic and Claudio Pizarro will be the beneficiaries of Gomez's injury as they will now get the chance to stake their claims for a starting berth before he returns.
