Brunt battling to be fit

Baggies skipper needs to prove fitness before season opener

Chris Brunt: Struggling to be fit for the first game of the Premier League season

West Brom captain Chris Brunt admits he is struggling to be fit in time for the club's Premier League opener against Liverpool.

The Baggies winger will miss Saturday's friendly against his former club Sheffield Wednesday as he rests the calf injury that has hampered his pre-season.

That leaves the Northern Ireland international with just Tuesday's trip to neighbours Walsall and the game at Nottingham Forest on 10th August to prove his fitness to face the Reds on 18th August.

Brunt has not featured in any of the Baggies' pre-season games after being sent home from the trip to Sweden for treatment but expects to be training properly next week.

He told the Express and Star: "I've had a couple of decent days this week and I'm hoping if everything goes alright I'll be back in full training next week.

"It's really frustrating because I've missed out on a lot of fitness work as well.

"Also, I haven't played any football yet - other than the few training sessions I got involved in.

"The nature of the injury means it's difficult for me to run on it, which is a bit of a nightmare.

"If I want to be involved against Liverpool I'm going to have to play some football."
