Northampton manager Aidy Boothroyd fears Clarke Carlisle's media opportunities may hinder a possible move to Sixfields.
Boothroyd has been very public in his attempts to lure the central defender following a loan spell during the second half of last season.
But the Cobblers' manager now admits that it is unlikely Carlisle will sign a permanent deal due to commitments off the field.
Boothroyd told the Northampton Chronicle and Echo: "It's getting to the stage now where I'm thinking 'well, are you coming or not?'
"If I was a betting man, and I'm not, I wouldn't put any money on him wearing our shirt for this season.
"I think we might be seeing him with a microphone rather than a Cobblers shirt."
