Sky Sports understands Notts County are talks with former Carlisle striker Francois Zoko.
Zoko is available on a free transfer after seeing out his contract at Brunton Park earlier this summer.
The 28-year-old rejected Carlisle's offer of a new deal and a number of clubs have expressed an interest in the Ivorian's services.
Sheffield United and Preston are thought to have enquired about signing the striker, but now Notts County are hoping to steal a march on their League One rivals by winning the race for Zoko.
Magpies boss Keith Curle is keen to add to his attacking options and is hoping to lure Zoko to Meadow Lane.
