Giovani dos Santos has angered Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas after ruling out staying at White Hart Lane when his current deal runs out.
The 23-year-old has got just 12 months left on the five-year contract he signed after switching from Barcelona for £4.7m.
The Mexican midfielder admits he would like to return to Spain next summer, much to the ire of his new manager.
Villas-Boas has questioned the timing of his comments and will make a decision on his future when he returns to London.
"I am not sure what Gio's thought process was, coming out with a statement like that," said the Tottenham boss.
"The player is contracted to the club. We respect him and are counting on him to return to club duty.
"Then we will make a decision that is best for the club."
