Sky Sports understands Oldham have agreed a deal to sign former Scunthorpe defender Cliff Byrne.
Byrne is available on a free transfer after leaving Scunthorpe earlier this summer.
The 30-year-old has been training with Oldham and he has impressed Latics boss Paul Dickov.
League One rivals Preston had also expressed an interest in the Irishman, but Oldham have now moved to secure Byrne's signature.
Byrne is expected to sign a one-year deal at Boundary Park to become Dickov's latest new arrival.
