Preston chairman Peter Ridsdale has promised further firepower after Lee Trundle completed his move to Deepdale.
Veteran forward Trundle, 35, penned a one-year contract on Friday to become North End boss Graham Westley's 13th signing of a summer overhaul.
But Ridsdale claims a long-time target may yet offer Westley further options in the final third.
"We have someone in mind who we've been tracking all summer," Ridsdale told the Lancashire Evening Post.
"He's a proven goalscorer and we'd like to do a deal at the right price.
"It's not someone who has been at the club (on trial) during the pre-season."
