Marcos Angeleri has brought to an end a forgettable two-year stint at Sunderland by securing a return to his native Argentina with Estudiantes.

The 29-year-old defender joined the Black Cats in the summer of 2010, but struggled to make an impact in English football.

He made just three appearances during his first season on Wearside.

Things failed to improve in 2011/12, as he continued to slip down the pecking order at the Stadium of Light.

It was expected that he would be offloaded during the current transfer window, and that has proved to be the case.

Angeleri has agreed a deal with former employers Estudiantes, the club he spent eight years with prior to embarking on his Premier League adventure.

Second home

"I have come back to Argentina for good," he said.

"Estudiantes is like my second home."

Angeleri admits he had other options to consider, but says there was only one club he wanted to join.

"I had been in touch with Independiente and San Lorenzo, but I gave my word to Estudiantes," he added.

"It was always my intention to return to Argentina, and hopefully Estudiantes.

"I hope to be able to win a place in the team and fight for important titles like we were doing in 2009."
