Gary Cahill has no doubts his Chelsea defensive partner, John Terry, has the strength of character to overcome the stress of his court case.

The Stamford Bridge captain was earlier in July cleared of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand.

And Cahill now thinks Terry, who he is expected to partner at the heart of Chelsea's defence for the majority of next season, will come back as strong as ever.

Cahill said: "Everyone at the club is happy JT was cleared and I don't think it will affect him in any way.

"The most important thing is that JT will be clear to play for us again next season and that is fantastic"

"He has been through loads but because of his character he seems to steamroller over everything and motor on. When he comes back from holiday, all these issues will be behind him.

"The most important thing is that JT will be clear to play for us again next season and that is fantastic."

Cahill is himself hoping to have a focused season after his last campaign was disrupted by a January move from Bolton to Chelsea, who were themselves in a state of uncertainty over the future of former boss Andre Villas-Boas.

The centre-back then missed Euro 2012 after injuring his draw in England's warm-up friendly against Belgium at Wembley.

Cahill, who had helped Chelsea to win the UEFA Champions League, said: "At Bolton there was uncertainty about if I'd be going.

"Then I came to Chelsea and that was just as crazy as everything was up in the air with the manager.

"But now we know Robbie Di Matteo is the gaffer. So hopefully I can settle down and just play the game with a bit of stability."
