Sky Sports understands former Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper Ben Smith is on trial at Middlesbrough.
The 25-year-old free agent is also attracting interest from Paolo Di Canio's Swindon Town as they prepare for life in League One.
Smith was released by Shrewsbury in May after losing his place in the first team at New Meadow.
But if he impresses Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray, the goalkeeper would be stepping up to Championship level to provide back-up for the likes of Jason Steele.
Smith has also spent time at Stockport County, Doncaster Rovers, Lincoln City and Morecambe during his career.
