Sylvain Distin is hoping to welcome fresh faces into the Everton squad this summer, with Steven Pienaar among those he is keen to see drafted in.

The Toffees continue to work to a tight budget, preventing David Moyes from splashing large quantities of cash.

He is, however, looking to make additions and is working hard to identify potential targets.

Pienaar is among those on his shopping list, with the South African playmaker having returned for a second spell at Goodison Park last season on a loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur.

Distin is keen to see a permanent agreement put in place, with Everton in need of bodies if they are to challenge for another top-half finish in the Premier League.

Strengthen

"You always need to strengthen," the French centre-half told Sky Sports News HD.

"Any manager, or any team, would not want any players. We have still got a small squad and we would definitely like to add some players.

"The most important thing is to keep the players we have got - that's my personal point of view.

"If we can have players like Steven Pienaar coming back to the club, that would be great."

Asked what Everton's targets will be in 2012/13, Distin added: "It's difficult. We need to see what's going to happen with the other teams around us, who is going to stay, who is going to go, who is going to come to our squad, then you can start thinking about it.

"Finishing as high as we can is the aim - we did quite well last season and if we can do better, that would be perfect."
