Newcastle United saw their pre-season tour of Germany get off to an unfortunate start on Friday as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Chemnitzer FC.
An early goal from Anton Fink rocked the Magpies and, despite creating numerous chances, they were unable to find a route back into the game.
Alan Pardew offered starting berths to a number of senior stars in the opening friendly of his side's summer preparations.
New signing Romain Amalfitano was among those to get the nod, and he looked bright early on.
Newcastle were ultimately undone by a swift counter-attack, though, as Chemnitzer surged forward in the ninth minute and created an opening for Fink to slot calmly past Rob Elliot.
Haris Vuckic, Shola Ameobi and Dan Gosling all went close for the Magpies, but they were continually frustrated by home goalkeeper Philipp Pentke.
