Sky Sports understands Oldham are lining up a deal for Irish defender Cliff Byrne following his release by Scunthorpe.
Byrne, currently a free agent, is training with the Latics and is thought to have impressed manager Paul Dickov.
The 30-year-old is set to be offered a contract at Boundary Park ahead of the new campaign.
The Irishman has spent the majority of his career to date at Scunthorpe after joining on loan from Sunderland in 2002 before penning a permanent deal the following year.
Byrne notched up 266 appearances for the Iron over his nine-year stay.
