Sampdoria owner Riccardo Garrone has revealed the club are in talks with Rafa Benitez about becoming their new manager.
The 52-year-old has been out of work since December 2010 when he was sacked by Inter Milan, having only been appointed in the previous June.
Benitez, however, has been continually linked with coaching roles in England and around Europe since his dismissal and could replace Giuseppe Iachini as Sampdoria coach.
"There have been contacts with Benitez," Garrone said to Sky Italia. "But it's a work in progress."
Iachini took over the Genoa outfit last November and led the team to promotion to Serie A via the play-offs last month, and he still has another year left on his contract.
