Joleon Lescott insists the England players can hold their heads up high following their Euro 2012 exit at the quarter-final stage.
The Manchester City defender played a key role in a superb defensive that kept a dominant Italian side at bay for two hours and took the match to penalties.
Former West Ham forward Alessandro Diamanti sent the Italians through to a semi-final date with Germany on Thursday after Ashley Young and Ashley Cole both failed from the spot.
But depsite the defeat Lescott believes the fans can take heart from the way the team is improving with every game.
"Obviously we are disappointed with the way things have happened," Lescott told Sky sports. "But we have progress and showed a lot of pride and passion and every England fan wants to see in our performances and we have shown that.
"We can take a lot of credit from the performances we dug in at times when we were under pressure and showed a lot of pride."
