Genoa have pulled out of a deal to sign Adrian Mutu from Cesena - but the relegated side still hope to sell him this summer.
The Seahorses are hoping to negotiate the exits of many of their top stars following their demotion to Serie B.
And the Romanian, who scored eight goals in 28 league appearances for Cesana in 2011/12, was on the verge of being the first weight off the wage-bill.
President Igor Campedelli told Sky Italia: "We had a deal agreed with Genoa, however, everything then collapsed.
"He is on the market and we'll see what happens between now and August 31."
The 33-year old, who joined from Fiorentina last summer, has one year left on his contract.
