Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini is battling to be fit for the remainder of Euro 2012 due to a hamstring injury.
The sight of the 27-year-old limping off against the Republic of Ireland on Monday was the only negative in the Azzurri's 2-0 win.
And the team doctor Enrico Castellacci confirmed the signs were not good for a speedy recovery for the Juventus centre-back.
"These injuries never have immediate recovery periods, but we'll have to wait for the tests that we conduct in a couple of days," said Castellacci.
However, Italy coach Cesare Prandelli sought to take a more positive view on the situation.
Chiellini was part of the Italy squads at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup and it is this type of experience that Prandelli would like at his disposal in their quarter-final on Sunday in Kiev.
"I have faith in our great physios and medical staff to get him ready," he ready.
