Dutch coach did not want to discuss his future after elimination

Rafael van der Vaart admitted Holland 'didn't deserve to go through' after a Cristiano Ronaldo brace put pay to any hopes the Dutch had of progressing at Euro 2012. Holland were chasing the two-goal victory they needed to have any chance of advancing to the quarter-finals. And the Tottenham playmaker and captain for the night helped them on their way in Kharkiv, scoring with a curling left-foot shot early on, before Ronaldo answered his critics with a double to secure their passage to the last eight. "We started quite well but we were playing against one of the better teams today," Van der Vaart admitted. "We lost three times. We were bad and we don't deserve to go through."

Future

Meanwhile, head coach Bert Van Marwijk did not want to discuss his future after elimination from the competition, which saw his side finish rock bottom of Group B. "We had to win with a two-goal difference so we had to take a risk and go forward, it started well but then it didn't (go to plan). We are disappointed we did not play well today, I am disappointed, I am responsible," he said. "We started every match well and today the scenario was right when we opened the scoring but then you have to keep that advantage to force your opponent to take more risks." "But again we proved not able to do that and then we gave the goals away to easy. I am responsible and therefore failed this tournament but at this moment I am not thinking about my future," he said, adding that he has a contract until 2016. Van Marwijk felt Ronaldo, who was criticised for his performances in their opening two matches, was outstanding on the night. "Ronaldo got so much criticism in the last game and he is back now," he added. "That is how fast things can change."
