Sky Sports sources understand Reading are confident of signing free agent Colombia midfielder Carlos Sanchez.
The Premier League new-boys have been linked with the defensive-minded former Valenciennes player for several months.
And Reading boss Brian McDermott is now close to getting his man, who will add some power to midfield for what will be a tough season back in the top flight.
Sanchez, 26, has played 25 times for his country and has also been linked with Italian clubs Udinese and Genoa.
But Championship winners Reading believe they are in pole position as, after an attempt to sign Watford's Adrian Mariappa, McDermott makes a clear attempt to add defensive strength.
