Aberdeen manager Craig Brown has confirmed the club will let Kari Arnason move on in the summer after making alternative plans.
Arnason is due to be out of contract and the Iceland international rejected an offer to stay at Pittodrie back in January.
Brown said at the time the Dons would not be increasing their offer, but Arnason revealed earlier this month that he would be prepared to renegotiate in the hope of reaching a compromise.
However, veteran boss Brown drew up a contingency plan and believes he now has enough cover in midfield in order to be able to allow Arnason to leave.
"We were forced to plan ahead when he turned down our offer several months ago," said Brown in the Evening Express.
"We then secured Gavin Rae and Stephen Hughes on longer deals, and we feel we now have plenty of cover as far as central midfield goes."
