Oldham Athletic expect Kieran Lee to join Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer after the full-back rejected a new contract.
Lee's deal with the Latics is due to expire and the 23-year-old has been offered terms to stay at Boundary Park.
However, Oldham chairman Simon Corney confirmed that Lee will be moving on in the summer and he believes he is heading to Hillsborough following the Owls' promotion to the Championship.
Corney told the Oldham Chronicle: "We gave Kieran an offer but in Sheffield Wednesday we are talking about a Championship club who attract 27,000 fans to every home match. No club in our division can compete.
"When some players move on you are annoyed because you feel they owe you something, but that is not the case with Kieran at all. I honestly could not be happier for him."
Lee is a popular figure at Oldham and he has made over 130 appearances for the club since joining from Manchester United in 2008.
