Rangers boss pleased by swift response to Old Firm derby defeat

Ally McCoist could not hide his delight after his Rangers side thrashed Dundee United 5-0 to secure second place in the SPL. United's Champions League hopes were blown away within 20 minutes of the start of the match, with two goals from Sone Aluko and one from Stephen Whittaker putting Rangers into a clear lead. Their dominance continued after the break with goals from Jamie Ness and Alejandro Bedoya, providing a boost to the club just a few days after their 3-0 defeat to Celtic and with their future still uncertain. "Overall I'm thrilled with the reaction to the disappointment of the Old Firm game," McCoist told Sky Sports. "I'm just pleased for everybody - pleased for the players and pleased for the fans "The pressure and the closing-down especially made our moves from the back more comfortable, we were pressing a little higher up the park with boys like Wallace, Kerkar and Aluko putting them under pressure. "They were playing longer balls which our back three handled very, very well. I've told them that we still gave them one or two chances too easily at set plays, but United are very good at that." Aluko had several chances to complete a hat-trick before being substituted with 15 minutes to go, and his manager was full of praise for the striker's all-round display. "He was a little disappointed to come off, but his two goals were sensational. He is absolutely electric over the first 10 to 15 yards, as is Bedoya who I'm pleased got a goal a goal tonight. "But Aluko's performance, aside from his goals, was excellent. He harried and closed people down, he was definitely more of a threat in a central area."
