Sir Alex Ferguson is looking for his wounded Manchester United side to offer the perfect response to a painful setback when they face Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Red Devils boss admits his players are hurting in the wake of a shock 1-0 reversal at relegation-haunted Wigan in midweek.

Defeat at the DW Stadium has offered Manchester City fresh hope in the Premier League title race, and the Blues closed to within two points of United with a 6-1 thumping of Norwich on Saturday.

It is now up to United to prove that they can handle the pressure of front-running, and Ferguson is confident his troops will be up to the task when they welcome Villa to Old Trafford - in a game which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1 HD and in Sky 3D.

"I do expect a positive reaction," he said.

"The players are hurt. They always want to win. That's their mentality.

"That's the attitude they've got - they always try to win. I hope they get it right against Villa."

Temperament

Quotes of the week

Despite seeing City brush aside Norwich at Carrow Road, Blues boss Roberto Mancini has once again claimed that the top-flight crown is destined for Old Trafford.

Ferguson is refusing to buy into that belief, but hopes United's vast experience of title-chasing plays into their hands over the coming weeks.

"I never think it's over," he said.

"We've still got difficult away games. At home we're one of the better form teams, but we know it's a hard job. That's what this league is all about.

"But I don't have concerns about the temperament of our team. There's enough experience there."
