Northampton are set to offer winger Michael Jacobs a new contract to fend off interest from other clubs.
But Town boss Aidy Boothroyd insists the Cobblers will not break the bank to keep their prized asset.
Jacobs will be out of contract in the summer and a number of higher-level clubs are keen to sign the 20-year-old.
"I think he'd be better off staying with Northampton, but then I'm not waving pound notes at him so we'll have to wait and see," said Boothroyd.
"We'll see how it goes. I don't tend to worry too much about that. You make people offers and they'll either take them or they won't.
"He isn't a Bosman as he's under 24 so therefore there will be a substantial fee for the club. So then it's up to the chairman to decide whether he gives it to the playing side of the club or covers some of the losses he's made previously."
