Veteran star eager to start MLS title defence

Landon Donovan has admitted he did not expect David Beckham's decision to stay at LA Galaxy. Heavily linked with a move to Paris St Germain, the former England captain penned a two-year deal with the American side he joined in 2007. That contract extension at the tender age of 36, could be the last for Beckham who now looks likely to finish his career in the United States in what is a welcomed boost, particularly to team-mate Donovan and to the Galaxy who begin their MLS title defence against Real Salt Lake City on Saturday. Donovan said: "Excited, maybe a little surprised that David stayed but very excited that David stayed here and wants to be a part of this team." Former Real Madrid star Beckham said: "I go through my life without trying to have any regrets. I've been happy here for five years and I will continue to be." On Saturday's opponents, he added: "We're excited about the game and excited to be back at home, and excited to go into this season as champions. "It's nice to open up at home but obviously Salt Lake they're one of the best teams in the league and you always want to compete against the best teams in the league and players, and I think Salt Lake is up there."
