Hamburg have announced Mladen Petric will leave the club at the end of the season after they decided not to extend his contract.
Petric's current deal expires in the summer and Hamburg will let the Croatian international leave on a free transfer.
The 31-year-old, who has been with Hamburg since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in 2008, has been allowed to move on as the club look to refresh their squad next season.
"It was important to clarify the situation as quickly as possible," said Hamburg's sporting director Frank Arnesen.
"Mladen has scored a lot of goals for Hamburg, and he is still an important player but we have opted for another route," he added.
Petric, who has had a wretched season with injuries and played just six times, admitted he would have liked to have stayed Hamburg, but knows he must now sort out his future.
"I would have liked to have signed a long-term contract but it is not possible at Hamburg," said Petric.
"At least the decision has been taken and I can look to the future."
