Shola Ameobi believes Newcastle still have a chance of qualifying for Europe after salvaging a draw in the Tyne-Wear derby.
The striker scored in the 90th minute against Sunderland to claim a point and move five points clear of sixth-placed Liverpool.
Alan Pardew's side have surprised many this season following their promotion from the Championship.
But their recent form has suffered of late and the Magpies are without a win in their last three games.
They travel to Arsenal in their next Premier League match on Monday, before games against Norwich and West Brom before the end of March.
But Ameobi is confident that, with other clubs struggling for consistency, Newcastle can take advantage and play in Europe next sesason.
He said: "They [Chelsea] are having a tough time at the moment and every point we can pick up...
"Liverpool lost on Saturday, so it was an incentive to get a result for us to try to put a gap between us and them.
"It's a realistic target for us now, trying to get the European spot, and the fans can rest assured we are going to do everything we can to try to achieve that."
