Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Colchester took the edge off a surprise full debut for Preston youngster George Miller.
Miller was thrust into Graham Westley's starting line-up at the Weston Homes Community Stadium and almost repaid his manager's faith when he rattled the underside of the crossbar with a fierce early drive.
However, the U's subsequent stroll to victory left a bitter taste for the 20-year-old lifelong North End fan.
"It was nice to get my full debut, but from a team perspective it wasn't good enough to lose 3-0," Miller told the Lancashire Evening Post.
"The gaffer sprang it on me, he told me on Friday that I'd be playing, saying I'd impressed him in training.
"It was quite a busy week because I'd played in the reserves against Manchester City last Tuesday, which was my first 90 minutes for a while after I'd had a thigh injury. Hopefully, there will be more chances for me to show what I can do in the first team."
