Chris Hughton will not rush into a decision on trialist Caleb Folan after fellow striker Danny Webber also reportedly linked up with Birmingham City on trial.
Folan has been training with Blues following his recent departure from Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids and Webber is also looking for a new club after leaving Portsmouth last summer.
Blues boss Hughton is keen to improve his squad to boost the club's push for promotion and wants to ensure he has fully assessed Folan's fitness before making a decision.
"Although he's physically in good shape, he hasn't played so many games in the last couple of months," said Hughton in the Birmingham Mail. "We just need to get a feel of where he is."
Meanwhile, Hughton is also hoping to bring in a loan signing and does not believe he could be doing much more in his efforts to secure a fresh face.
He added: "We couldn't be working any harder than we are.
"When you're looking to bring in loans they're not your players and you're reliant on other clubs releasing players or looking for opportunities for them to get games.
"The search continues. It has been difficult but I'm probably in the same position as an awful lot more managers."
