Gordon Taylor wants a line to be drawn under the race row involving Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra by the duo shaking hands this weekend.
Liverpool striker Suarez has now completed his eight-game ban after being found guilty by the Football Association's independent regulatory commission of racially abusing Manchester United defender Evra at Anfield in October.
The Reds make the trip to Old Trafford on Saturday for the return clash in the Premier League with the two men certain to be under the spotlight.
And Taylor, chief executive of the Professional Footballers Association, believes that it is time for all concerned to look to the future.
Festering
Taylor told
Sky Sports News: "I would hope that would take place, that would be a sign that having gone through the situation that those two players would shake hands and we can move on.
"If they can accept that having paid that penalty, like Suarez has, that you learn from it and move on.
"That's the only chance we've got, if we can do that.
"If you keep things festering it will only exacerbate how the problem was initially, and in that way we will be losing the battle."
