Stiliyan Petrov: Ruing missed chances in defence
Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov admits defensive lapses are costing the team vital Premier League points.
The 13th place side lost 2-1 to Newcastle on Sunday despite being level in the second half and the defeat means Villa have now gained just five points from their last five outings.
The Bulgarian midfielder believes that his side are allowing teams to poach points far too easily as they are unable to close out games.
And, with only three wins in the last 10 matches, Petrov admits current performances are infuriating as Villa fail to register points on a regular basis.
Frustrated
"We were all frustrated and disappointed especially after the performance we put in and the chances we created," he said.
"We have been playing well but we haven't been getting the results. That's the next step that we need to sort out.
"We are conceding goals too easily. We are controlling games, the opposition don't have anything in the game and suddenly we find ourselves one down."
Hard
Four of Villa's six wins this season have come when they have scored three goals and the 32-year-old believes his side are relying on more goals to cover defensive lapses.
"It seems like we need to score more than two goals to win a game, which is not good," he added.
"We used to defend very well and we used to be a very hard team to beat but it's just not going for us. We will start picking things up.
"We've been putting in some great performances, creating good chances and playing good stuff but, unfortunately, we can't grind out the results."
