Clark - No contact with Leeds

Bookmakers and the media have installed the Terriers boss as one of the favourites to replace Simon Grayson, who was sacked by the Championship club on Wednesday.

Neil Warnock was the early favourite for the job but speculation suggested that the Whites were targeting Clark, who is currently aiming to win promotion from League One.

He has been unable to reach the Championship for the past two seasons and lost in the play-off final to Peterborough last term.

The former Newcastle and Fulham midfielder replaced Stan Ternent at the Galpharm Stadium in 2008 - his first job as a manager - after being Glenn Roeder's assistant at Norwich.

The 39-year-old admitted that he has noticed the reports and understands why he is being put in the frame.

Clark was also linked with the vacant position at Leicester City, prior to Nigel Pearson taking over.

Aware

He told the Huddersfield Daily Examiner: "I am aware of it, but ultimately it is the same as last time.

"I am not trying to blow my own trumpet, but it is because people outside our football club think I am doing a good job.

"I have been linked with a number of jobs over the past 12 months but I think that is because our record backs that up.

"We have only two defeats in 53 league games, the value of the squad is hugely higher than when I came to the club and the corporate side of the club is going through the roof which is only down to the way the team plays.

"I don't think I'm too bad a manager really and that's why people are interested I think."

Huddersfield are preparing for a huge League One clash this Saturday, as they take on promotion-rivals MK Dons at home.

A win could lift them three points clear of other promotion hopefuls and keep them in second place.

No distraction

But Clark insists the attention over the Leeds position is not a distraction, adding: "It is something I have had to deal with since I was a boy.

"I captained England schoolboys at 14 and Newcastle United turned down quarter of a million pound bids, so I have grown up with it.

"It's good for my kids, because they think their dad's important now."

Clark refused to rule himself out of the running for the job, saying: "It's just speculation. Until I am told otherwise, I am the manager of Huddersfield Town."
