Crewe have revealed they failed in a deadline-day attempt to bring Southampton defender Jack Saville to Gresty Road on loan.

Saville, 20, recently completed a loan spell at Barnet and was part of the side that overcame Alex 2-0 last weekend.

The Railwaymen acquired defensive headaches on the back of that game as Adam Dugdale and David Artell were sent off, and boss Steve Davis earmarked Saville as the ideal candidate to provide cover and competition at centre-back.

A statement on Crewe's official website read: "The Alex coaching staff attempted to bring in Southampton defender Jack Saville on loan to offer competition and cover at centre-half.

"With Adam Dugdale (three games) and David Artell (one game) suspended following their red cards at Barnet at the weekend, Steve Davis and Neil Baker acted quickly to bring in another one, but they just couldn't pull it off before the 11pm deadline."

Crewe are ready to rekindle their interest in Saville, and the statement added: "The 20-year-old could be an option again once the seven-day period has passed and Football League clubs are permitted to bring players in again on emergency loan."
