Cobblers boss admires Carlisle

Northampton manager Aidy Boothroyd believes the signing of Clarke Carlisle will prove just as important off the field as it will on it.

Boothroyd has brought Carlisle, who he managed during his time at Watford, in on loan from Burnley for the remainder of the season. The 32-year-old central defender terminated his season-long loan at Preston in order to complete his move to Sixfields. "Sometimes I think you go for players not thinking that you can get them, but you've got to go for them anyway," said Boothroyd at a press conference on Wednesday. "I think we got very lucky in Clarke's case as Preston were signing a centre-back. "I've known Clarke a long time and he's exactly the sort of player that we need here, but more importantly he's exactly the sort of person we need here. "He's a leader in every sense and he's a guy that I know and who knows me and my methods and will help us to establish what we want to do more quickly. "I'm hoping he will be a catalyst to help us climb up the table on the pitch and also someone to lay down a lot of foundations off the pitch as regards culture."
