Birmingham boss Chris Hughton has played down transfer talk regarding Craig Gardner and Simon Cox.
Hughton made enquiries concerning versatile Sunderland midfielder Gardner and Baggies striker Cox as he plots a push to the Premier League.
But Hughton admits his hopes of landing the pair look set to come to nothing.
Regarding Gardner, he told the Birmingham Mail: "I don't think it would be going against anything or wrong to say there was an enquiry from ourselves. But I don't see anything happening there.
"He's a Sunderland player, they have a new manager, he's been in the team and scoring a few goals - a couple of cracking goals - and I can very much understand why they wouldn't want to do anything."
The Birmingham boss also played down talk of signing Cox, adding: "No, nothing there. The fact he's playing in their team at the moment shows what value he has to them.
"He's a very good player but he's a West Bromwich Albion player."
