Player and club keen to negotiate contract extension

Schalke's veteran forward Raul appears set to sign a new deal with the club after entering the first stage of negotiations over an extension. The former Spain international is contracted at the Bundesliga side until the end of the season after joining on a free transfer from Real Madrid in 2010. Both player and club are keen to extend the deal and Schalke representatives opened talks with his agent, Gines Carvajal, on Wednesday evening. Schalke general manager Horst Heldt said: "We have been in those talks, yes. "They were about various ways of how to sign new terms. We are confident."

New deal

Clemens Tonnies, chairman of the club's supervisory board, added: "Raul wants to stay on and we want to keep him here. "There are no better circumstances for a new contract to be signed. Why should a signature be out of our reach?" Raul, who came through the youth ranks at Real Madrid and spent the majority of his career at the Bernabeu, notching up over 500 appearances, expects to pen a new deal in the near future after adapting well to life in Germany. The 34-year-old told Deutsche Presseagentur: "My family and I are enjoying life at the club and in this country. "I want to play on professionally and I am completely convinced we are about to reach a new agreement."
