Sky Sports understands Bournemouth have made a bid for free-scoring Colchester midfielder Anthony Wordsworth.
Community Stadium boss John Ward in December acknowledged a number of clubs would be watching the 23-year-old, who this season has netted nine times.
Colchester therefore earlier in January took steps to agree a new contract with Wordsworth in an attempt to put off potential admirers.
But play-off challengers Bournemouth have tested the resolve of their League One rivals and a move before next Tuesday's transfer deadline could materialise.
Colchester, who sit 15th in the table and seven points off the relegation zone, will now consider their response to the approach.
At the same time, Lee Bradbury's Bournemouth have reportedly agreed a fee with Brighton for Will Hoskins, which has disappointed the striker.
