Wolves midfielder Jamie O'Hara could be out for another fortnight as he makes slow progress following double hernia surgery last month.
The initial prognosis for the injury was that O'Hara could be back within six weeks but that target has now passed.
O'Hara played a key role in Wolves' survival last season but McCarthy is already resigned to the former Tottenham man missing next week's vital home match against Liverpool.
"Jamie won't be ready for Liverpool," said McCarthy. "He's going to be another week to two weeks yet."
The news is a further blow to McCarthy with his Wolves side on a run of 10 games without a win.
Before being hit by injury, O'Hara had proven a hit at Molineux scoring six goals in 29 appearances since moving to the Midlands club - initially on loan - last January.
