Oldham boss Paul Dickov concedes there are some financial hurdles to overcome if Nathan Clarke is to return to Boundary Park.
Clarke is out of the first-team picture at Huddersfield, where the 28-year-old recently returned after making 20 appearances during a successful loan spell with Latics.
"There are a few things that need to get sorted out," Dickov told the Oldham Chronicle.
"The main thing is financial again. Nathan is on a decent wage there and if he can sort something out at his end with Huddersfield, there is a good chance it will be done.
"We are not in a position to pay the wages that the likes of Huddersfield pay their players. We are still speaking to Nathan about possibly bringing him back in and one or two others maybe.
"Finances will dictate what we can and can't do. That isn't a moan from me and I am pleased with what I have got. If we can add a bit of quality to the squad, we will try."
