Sky Sports sources understand USA international Tim Ream was at Bolton's training ground on Friday with a view to sealing a move to the Premier League side.
The defender, currently on the books of Major League Soccer club New York Red Bulls, will attend the Trotters' clash at Manchester United on Saturday as manager Owen Coyle closes on his signature.
Ream is hot property in the transfer market this month, with Arsenal and West Brom having also been linked with the 24-year-old.
Coyle played down reports claiming the American was to undergo a medical at Bolton on Thursday, but admitted to being a fan of the defender.
Ream recently spent time on trial with the Trotters and could fill the gap left by star stopper Gary Cahill if the centre-back completes his proposed move to Chelsea.
