Darren Purse is determined to help lead struggling Plymouth Argyle to League Two safety.

The defender, who penned a six-month contract with the Pilgrims last week following a loan spell at Home Park, has settled in well to life in Devon.

Despite Argyle propping up the Football League at present, the 34-year-old is confident he can play a major role in guiding his new club to survival and perhaps an extended stay in the south west.

"I have great belief we will stay up," he told the Plymouth Herald. "Keeping the club in the Football League is the most important thing. That's why I have come to Plymouth. It's a big challenge but it's one worth fighting for and I think we can win it.

"It was always going to lead to a permanent deal in January. And it's not just until the end of the season.

"There is an agreement in the contract to extend it if things go well so, hopefully, I'd down here for the long term."
