Mainz believe the likes of Ivica Olic, Patrick Helmes and Srdan Lakic are out of their price range.
The club's general manager, Christian Heidel, has laughed off talk of any of the unsettled trio moving to Mainz this January.
Olic has just six months remaining on his contract at Bayern Munich, while Wolfsburg are looking to offload Helmes and Lakic.
But Heidel told kicker-Sportmagazin: "Everyone is telling me we are after Olic, Helmes and Lakic. I can just laugh about such gossip.
"The funds such players would require is by far not something a club like Mainz could afford. So we cannot bring those players over to Mainz."
Heidel added: "Basically I do not feel it is likely that we are about to sign a striker in the January transfer window."
Mainz last week announced new contracts had been agreed with Portuguese defender Felipe Lopes and Ivory Coast midfielder Ibrahim Sissoko, while French youth international Giovanni Sio was signed from Sion.
