St Johnstone boss Steve Lomas has revealed Rangers are trying to sign striker Francisco Sandaza on a pre-contract agreement.
Sandaza's contract expires at the end of the season and the player's agent has indicated he will not sign a new deal as he looks to secure a move to a bigger club.
Rangers are in the market for a new striker as speculation surrounds the future of Nikica Jelavic and they are hoping to land Sandaza on a free transfer.
Saints chief Lomas is aware of Rangers' interest in the Spaniard, but he hopes to keep the former Brighton man at McDiarmid Park.
"Rangers want him to sign a pre-contract," Lomas told the Sunday Mail.
"If they want to get him now then they have to speak to me and make an offer.
"Hopefully Fran will be lining up against Rangers next week, not playing for them."
Perth chairman Steve Brown is aware Rangers have spoken with Sandaza, but denied the player had already agreed a deal with Gers with other clubs monitoring his situation.
"It's my understanding Rangers have spoken to Fran but there's no agreement at present," said Brown.
"We have parties interested in Scotland and England yet there have been no concrete offers.
"We have offered Fran probably the best deal of any Saints player in recent times but can't compete with offers of £5000 a week or more."
