Craig Brown insists Aberdeen will not break the bank to secure defender Kari Arnason on a new contract beyond the summer.
The Sweden-born Iceland international's future is currently uncertain with his existing deal due to expire at the end of the season.
Brown is eager to keep the 29-year-old at Pittodrie, although he knows there is a wage structure he needs to adhere to.
"We want to keep Arnason but cannot be held to ransom," commented Brown.
"We will give him the best deal we can but that is all we can do. We don't want to distort the wage bill because it is not a one-man club.
"Arnason has been offered a deal but it is not formal. That will come after his agent has further talks with the chief executive."
