Danny Simpson wants Newcastle to sign off 2011 by "making a statement" with victory over Liverpool on Friday.
The Magpies returned to winning ways with a 2-0 success over Bolton last time out and will move back into the Premier League's top six if they can follow up by triumphing at Anfield.
"It's tough to go to Anfield at any time, so we know how difficult this Friday is going to be," full-back Simpson told Newcastle's official website.
"But with the win against Bolton we've got a little bit more confidence and have got our belief back again, so we will go there full of confidence.
"We don't see any reason why we can't go there and upset them.
"Liverpool are a point ahead of us, and if we go there and things go our way then we will be above them going into the New Year. It's a big chance for us to make a statement."
