Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish is hoping to have Darren Bent available on Saturday, but he will be without the services of Emile Heskey.
Villa travel to Chelsea on New Year's Eve for their latest Premier League fixture.
They will go to Stamford Bridge looking to force their way back into the top-half of the table.
McLeish's men have taken only one win from their last seven games, scoring just three goals in the process.
They desperately need an injection of firepower, and England international Bent will provide that.
He has been nursing thigh and groin complaints of late, but he is expected to come back into contention this weekend.
"He went for physio this morning (Thursday), did a good session, and he'll train with the team tomorrow and he'll travel," McLeish told Sky Sports News HD.
"He should then be available for selection."
While the news is positive on Bent's fitness, McLeish has revealed that Heskey will play no part against Chelsea.
He added: "Emile Heskey is out, he's got an Achilles problem, maybe a bit of a chronic injury as opposed to something serious, and we'll just have to manage that one. But he will miss this weekend's game."
