Roy Hodgson has confirmed that James Morrison will miss West Brom's trip to Newcastle, but is expecting to have him back in contention on Boxing Day.
The Scottish midfielder limped out of the Baggies' 2-1 victory over Blackburn on Saturday with a hamstring problem.
He had produced a spectacular strike in that contest, but was unable to make it through to the end at Ewood Park.
That knock is now set to keep him sidelined when West Brom travel to Tyneside on Wednesday.
Hodgson will be forced to explore other options against the Magpies, but he is confident Morrison will be welcomed back into the fold for a home date with table-topping Manchester City.
"James has a slight hamstring problem but we're hopeful it will clear up before the weekend," he told the club's official website.
"Unfortunately, with the game coming so close to the last one, it wasn't enough time.
"But I'm hopeful he'll be fit for Monday."
