Chelsea appear to have lost the race to sign Eduardo Vargas after the young Chile striker revealed he will be joining Napoli in January.
With Fernando Torres yet to recover his best form and Didier Drogba heading to the African Nations Cup, the 22-year-old had been linked with a big-money move to Stamford Bridge as boss Andre Villas-Boas fears he could lack fire-power upfront in January.
Vargas had attracted the attention of many big European clubs after leading Chilean league title holders, Universidad de Chile, to their first ever Copa Sudamericana.
But the hitman has decided to move to Italy to link up with fellow South Americans Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi.
"Yes I will be joining Napoli," he said. "I am sure I will do very well there and I know Cavani and Lavezzi."
